Canister Hose Clamps and Clamp Grooves: Do You Need One
Most canister filter hose loops do not need a clamp. A properly sized barb grips hose on its own with a snug push on fit. A clamp earns its place in a few specific spots, not on every joint in the loop.
This guide covers when a clamp is actually worth adding, the difference between a standard and a mini clamp, and how we size the clamp groove on the adapters that have one.
Why canister loops usually do not need a clamp at all
A barb sized to your hose grips through friction alone. Push the hose on while it is soft or slightly warm, let it cool, and it holds. Canister return lines run under gravity and light pump pressure, not the kind of pressure that blows a snug hose off a barb.
Every one of our adapter barbs is sized for that same snug push on fit, with or without a groove. You can add a clamp to any of them if you want extra hold, it is just not required for the fit to work.
Add a clamp to every joint out of habit and all you get is extra parts to keep track of and extra plastic pinched under a metal band. Save the clamp for the spot where it actually earns its keep.
When a clamp is worth the extra step (under-cabinet runs you cannot check often)
A clamp is worth adding on a run you cannot see every day, like a line tucked behind a stand or under a cabinet. If a joint were ever to work loose there, you would not notice until water was already on the floor.
It is also worth adding if a joint has slipped on you before, if you are moving a tank and want extra hold during transport, or if you share a home with a pet or a curious kid who tends to bump things behind the tank. A clamp is cheap insurance in any of those cases.
A quarantine tank or a spare setup you only check once a week is another good candidate. The less often you look at a joint, the more a clamp is worth the extra step.
Standard vs mini clamp sizing
Our clamp groove comes in two sizes, sized for two different clamp band widths. The standard size ships on several of our adapters today, across a few different hose sizes.

How our clamp groove is sized (SAE J1508, not a guess)
SAE J1508 is the sizing standard worm gear hose clamps are built to. It is not a TankRig standard. It is the same standard the clamp in your toolbox or your hardware store's bin already follows, so any clamp with that sizing works with our groove.
Our clamp groove adapters put a 13.7mm groove on the metric hose end, sized for 12/16mm or 16/22mm depending on the adapter, paired with vinyl or PVC on the other end. The groove is cut to the standard clamp band width plus a small clearance, so the clamp seats in the groove instead of riding up onto the barb ribs.
Snug the clamp down until it stops turning easily. You do not need to crank it as hard as you can. PETG is plastic, not metal, and an overtightened clamp can dig into the barb without adding any real hold beyond snug.

Do I need a hose clamp on my canister filter adapter?+

What is SAE J1508?+
It is the sizing standard most worm gear hose clamps are built to. A clamp that follows it matches the number stamped on its band to the standard's size chart, so any brand's clamp in that size fits our groove.
Can I add a clamp to an adapter that does not have a groove?+
Yes, a clamp still works without a groove to sit in. The groove just gives it a place to seat so it cannot slide up onto the barb ribs over time.
