Hydroponic and Aquaponic PVC Fittings: Spray Bars, Adapters, and UV Mounts for Schedule 40 Systems

Indoor hydroponic and aquaponic systems run the same plumbing standards as aquariums: Schedule 40 PVC pipe and clear vinyl tubing. That means some TankRig parts fit a grow reservoir the same way they fit a fish tank, with no changes at all. The same pumps show up in both worlds too. Many submersible pumps are sold for aquariums, ponds, and hydroponics in one listing.

This guide covers the three part families that carry over: our PVC slip spray bars, our PVC slip adapters, and our UV sterilizer mounts. It is also honest about what does not carry over, and about the limits. Everything here is for indoor or covered systems on low pressure pump loops. Nothing here is for pressurized lines or outdoor drip irrigation.

Why do aquarium PVC parts fit hydroponic systems?

Because the pipe is the same pipe. Schedule 40 PVC is a published standard, so a 3/4 inch Sch 40 pipe in a grow room has the same outside diameter as a 3/4 inch Sch 40 pipe feeding a rack of fish tanks. Our slip fittings are modeled to that standard, not to any one brand of tank.

Recirculating deep water culture (RDWC) and aquaponic systems plumb their return lines in 1/2 inch to 1 inch Sch 40 PVC. That is the exact size range our PVC slip parts are made for. If your system runs Sch 40 pipe, the interface matches.

Spray bars as reservoir return bars

Our PVC slip spray bars work as return bars on a hydroponic or aquaponic reservoir. Growers already build bars like this by hand. On the return line, a bar spreads the water through a row of small holes instead of one open pipe end. That breaks the flow into many small streams, so more of the water meets air on the way in. Growers do this to add air to the water for the roots.

The bar slips onto the pipe the same way it does on a tank manifold. The inlet is a plain spigot that pushes into a standard PVC fitting. We do not glue it, so you can pull it off to clean it. Add PVC cement yourself if you want a permanent joint. We do not publish a flow rate or an oxygen number. The bar spreads the water. What that does for your plants depends on your whole system, and that part is yours.

Adapters for aquaponics systems with a canister filter

Some small aquaponics setups run an aquarium canister filter on the fish tank. If yours does, our PVC slip adapters connect that filter's metric hose to a Sch 40 PVC manifold, the same job they do on a fish room rack. Every metric hose adapter we make works the same way in an aquaponics loop as it does under a fish tank.

One honest limit: this only helps if a canister filter is in your loop. Hydroponic reservoir pumps use threaded outlets and ship with their own barb fittings in the box. Use the barb kit that came with your pump for that connection. We do not make threaded fittings, and the kit in the box already does that job well.

UV sterilizer mounts on a reservoir

Recirculating hydroponic systems often run a small inline UV unit on the nutrient line, the same class of unit aquarium and pond keepers use. Our UV mounts are two piece clamps that hold an inline UV body against a wall or cabinet side. They fit body sizes from about 2-3/8 to 3 inches across.

Those body sizes come from maker listings for aquarium units. Hydro UV units are often the same hardware sold under a different name, but we have not measured any specific hydro model. Measure your UV body across the outside before you order, and match it to the size on the product page.

The limits: read this before you order

These parts carry over because the interface is the same, not because they can do more than they were built for. Three limits apply to every crossover use on this page.

  • Low pressure pump loops only. Our slip ends are friction fits, not glued joints, and our barbs are soft hose fits. They are made for submersible pump loops and gravity returns. Never put one on a municipal water line or a pressurized drip mainline.
  • Indoor or covered systems only. We print in PETG. It holds up well submerged and indoors, but direct sun wears it down over time. A grow tent or an indoor room is the best home for these parts. Do not use them in an uncovered outdoor garden.
  • No drip irrigation fit. Drip system poly tubing has no single standard size, so we make no fit claim for it. Our barbs are cut for vinyl tubing sizes, and our slip ends are cut for Sch 40 PVC. If your line is not one of those, our parts are not for it.

Frequently asked questions

Will a TankRig spray bar fit my RDWC return line?+

If your return line is 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch Schedule 40 PVC, yes. The bar's inlet is a plain spigot that pushes into a standard slip fitting. The pipe sizes are modeled to the published Sch 40 standard, the same pipe sold at any US hardware store.

Is PETG safe in a hydroponic or aquaponic reservoir?+

PETG is the material aquarium keepers have used submerged for years, including in tanks with live fish. An indoor reservoir at room temperature is a gentle home for it. Rinse every part before use, and keep it out of direct sun.

Can I connect a TankRig adapter to my reservoir pump outlet?+

No. Reservoir pump outlets are threaded, and the pump ships with its own barb fittings in the box. Use those for the pump connection. Our adapters connect metric canister filter hose to vinyl tubing or PVC pipe, which only matters if a canister filter is in your loop.

Do these parts work in an outdoor garden or greenhouse?+

We do not recommend it. PETG wears down in direct sun over time. Indoor rooms, grow tents, and fully covered spots are fine. Uncovered outdoor use is not.

Will the spray bar handle pressure from a drip irrigation system?+

No. The slip joint is a friction fit, not a glued or threaded joint. It is made for low pressure submersible pump loops and gravity returns only. Never connect it to a pressurized mainline.

A note on safety

We print every part in PETG. It is the material aquarium keepers have used submerged for years. We cannot promise how any part performs in your tank. You know your tank and your animals best, so the call is always yours. Rinse each part in clean water before you add it to your tank.
