Canister Filter Spray Bar vs Stock Outlet: Aquarium Flow for Planted Tanks

A spray bar spreads your canister filter's return water out through several small holes instead of one stream. A stock outlet nozzle sends the same water out in a single jet.

Neither one changes how much water your filter moves. What changes is where that water lands when it comes back into your tank. This guide covers when a spray bar helps, when your stock outlet is already doing the job, and how we designed ours around common complaints with printed spray bars.

What a spray bar actually changes about your return flow

A spray bar does not add power or push more water through your filter. It changes the shape of the return, spreading it across a row of holes instead of one nozzle opening.

Picture the difference between a garden hose with your thumb over the end and a soaker hose. Both move the same amount of water. One concentrates it into a single stream, the other spreads it out along its length. A spray bar does the soaker hose version for your filter return.

We do not publish a flow rate or pressure number for our spray bars, because that number depends on your filter, your hose length, and your plumbing, not just the bar itself.

When a stock outlet nozzle is already enough

A stock outlet nozzle is enough if your tank already has even flow with no dead spots, or if you keep fish that prefer calmer water, like bettas or some gouramis.

Small tanks and tanks with a lot of plants or decor that already break up the flow often do not need a wider spread. If you are happy with your circulation today, a spray bar is not something you need to add.

A spray bar is worth trying when you notice one corner of the tank barely moves, or when surface film keeps building up in the same spot.

Spray bar length and hole count, and why more holes is not always better

Our spray bars come in two lengths, 180mm and 200mm, each with 14 evenly spaced holes sized for one hose diameter. More holes packed into the same length just means less bar between each one, not stronger flow.

Match the bar to your hose size first, then the length to your tank. A bar that is too long for your tank just gets bent or cut, and a bar that is too short leaves flow concentrated on one side.

Mounting a spray bar along the back or side glass

Mount a spray bar along the back or side glass, just under the waterline, using suction cups or the built in zip tie slots. Either wall works. Pick whichever keeps the bar out of your sightline.

Our spray bars have two built in zip tie slots so you can lash the bar to a suction cup mount without extra hardware. Keep the bar level so the holes spread water evenly along its length instead of favoring one end.

Angle the bar slightly downward or straight across depending on how much surface movement you want. A bar aimed straight across the top pushes more surface film around. Angled down a little, it stirs more of the water column instead.

Why some printed spray bars get called 'not fit for purpose' (and how we designed around it)

Search for a printed spray bar online and you will find complaints about holes that do not line up and walls thin enough to crack in shipping. We designed ours to avoid both problems.

Every hole on our spray bar is the same size, cut straight through the bar, not tapered or uneven. The wall around each hole is thick enough to hold up to normal handling and mounting.

We are not going to tell you this fixes every flow or noise complaint you might have, because a spray bar is one part of a bigger system. What we can tell you is that the bar itself is built consistently, one bar to the next. We print in PETG. Aquarium keepers have used it submerged for years. Rinse before use.

Does a spray bar increase my filter's flow rate?+

Not always. If your tank has even flow already, or you keep fish that like calmer water, your stock outlet may be enough.

How do I mount a spray bar in my tank?+

Along the back or side glass, just under the waterline, using suction cups or the built in zip tie slots on the bar.

Will a spray bar make my filter quieter?+

It can help with splashing noise at the outlet, since spreading the water out reduces one hard stream hitting the surface. It will not fix motor noise or trapped air. See our canister filter noise guide for those causes.
