Turtle Tank Canister Filters: Hose Sizes, Spray Bars, and Intake Guards for Aquatic Turtles

Aquatic turtle tanks use the same canister filters and the same hose sizes as fish tanks. That means the adapters, spray bars, and intake guards we already make can work on a turtle setup, as long as the hose size matches.

This guide lists the hose sizes Zoo Med publishes for its Turtle Clean canister line, shows you how to measure your own hose when a maker's number is not clear, and explains what a spray bar and an intake guard actually do on a turtle tank. Where a size is not confirmed, we say so plainly instead of guessing.

Why do turtle tanks use canister filters?

Turtles make a lot more waste than fish of the same size. So turtle keepers usually run a canister filter, and many size up: a canister rated well above the tank's gallon count is a common choice in turtle-keeping guides.

Turtles are also hard on equipment. They bump, chew, and dig. That is why rigid parts, guarded intakes, and a firm hose connection matter more on a turtle tank, not less. We make fitment parts, not filters, so nothing on this page is advice about which filter to buy. It is about what connects to the filter you have.

What hose size does the Zoo Med Turtle Clean use?

Zoo Med publishes a hose size for every Turtle Clean canister model on its own product pages. Here is what Zoo Med states, model by model.

One honest catch: Zoo Med calls each number a diameter, but never says if it is the inside or the outside of the hose. That matters, because our adapter barbs are cut for a hose's inside size. Until that reading is confirmed, we report the number and hold off on claiming a fit.

Every size comes from Zoo Med's own product page for that model at zoomed.com, checked July 2026. Zoo Med states each number as a plain diameter without saying inside or outside. These sizes are listed in our model finder, but they are not matched to an adapter until that reading is confirmed. Measure your own hose using the steps below before you buy anything.

Do TankRig adapters fit the Turtle Clean?

Not confirmed yet, and we would rather say that than guess. Our barbs key on the inside diameter of the hose. Zoo Med's stated 5/8 inch and 3/4 inch sizes could be inside or outside measurements, and a barb cut for the wrong one will not grip.

Here is the honest path: measure your own hose. If the inside of your Turtle Clean 30 hose measures 5/8 inch, that is the inside size our 5/8 inch vinyl barb is cut for. Same logic for a 3/4 inch inside reading and our 3/4 inch barb. Your measurement is the source, not our guess.

Pull the hose off the filter and let it relax for a minute.
Measure the inside of the hose opening, not the outside. Ease a ruler or a rod gently in until it just touches both sides.
Write the number down. 5/8 inch is about 15.9mm. 3/4 inch is about 19mm.
Measure twice if the number sits close to two sizes.

What about standard aquarium canisters on a turtle tank?

Many turtle keepers skip the turtle-branded filters and run a standard aquarium canister instead. Those are the filters we already carry sourced sizes for.

For example, Penn Plax lists 5/8 inch inside diameter hose for the Cascade 700 through 1500, which is 15.88mm through the middle. Eheim, JBL, Oase, Aquael, Marineland, and more are covered model by model in our hose size guide, with every number traced to the maker's own spec or a verified listing.

If your canister is in that guide, its adapters, spray bars, and guards are already sized. The tank being a turtle tank changes nothing about the hose connection.

How does a spray bar help on a turtle tank?

A spray bar replaces the filter's single return nozzle with a rigid bar of small holes. The same water comes back into the tank through a row of small streams spread along the bar, instead of one jet aimed at one spot.

Turtle keepers often mount the bar along the back wall, and some aim it along the water line near the basking area. Where you point it is your call. The bar's job is mechanical: it spreads the return along its length, and it is a rigid printed part rather than a loose hose end that a turtle can shove around.

Our spray bars come in the same hose and PVC sizes as our adapters. Match the bar to your hose size the same way you match an adapter, by the inside measurement.

What does an intake guard do in a turtle setup?

An intake guard is a slotted cover that fits over the filter's intake. Its job is mechanical: it keeps gravel, uneaten food, shed bits, and plant scraps from being pulled flat against the intake slots, where they can block the opening.

Turtle tanks tend to have more loose debris in the water than fish tanks, so keepers use guards to keep that debris off the intake itself. To be clear about what a guard is not: it is not a safety device for your turtle, and we make no claim about protecting any animal. It is a screen for debris, nothing more.
