Why glass lily pipes are the aquascaping standard
Glass became the standard because it is truly clear and it holds a smooth, polished bore. Aquascapers picked it up decades ago and the look stuck. A glass lily pipe practically disappears in the tank, which keeps the eye on the plants and the hardscape instead of the equipment.
Glass also does not scratch as easily as acrylic over years of cleaning with a pipe brush, so a well cared for glass pipe can stay looking new for a long time.
What happens when glass breaks (and why keepers still buy it anyway)
Glass chips at the rim if it knocks against the tank frame, and it can crack all the way through if it takes a hard hit or a sharp temperature change. A cracked or shattered pipe in a stocked tank is a real hazard, for cut fingers during cleanup and for anything sharp left behind in the substrate.
Keepers still buy it because careful handling avoids most breaks, and because nothing else has looked quite like true glass. It is a real trade off, not a myth. You are trading some risk for the clearest possible look.
PETG as a shatterproof alternative: what changes, what stays the same
What stays the same is the fit. Our lily pipe sets use the same hose barb size as many glass pipes on the market.
What changes is the material. PETG will not shatter if it gets bumped by a net, a piece of hardscape, or the tank rim during a water change. Frost PETG is see through, but it is not glass clear. Layer lines from printing show a little more than a factory polished glass tube, so if perfect optical clarity is your top priority, glass still wins on that one point.

Frost PETG vs black or white: which to pick
Pick Frost if you want the aquascape look: water and plants showing through the pipe instead of a solid color breaking up the scene. It is the closest PETG gets to the glass look.
Pick black or white if you want the pipe to blend with your other hardware, or if you would rather not see algae film building up on the inside over time the way you might through Frost. Black tends to disappear against a dark background or a black rimmed tank. White reads clean against a bright aquascape or a white stand.
Price and durability, side by side
Glass lily pipes are usually sold as a matched inflow and outflow pair, and price swings a lot by brand, thickness, and finish. We do not have one sourced number that covers the whole category, so compare listings yourself if price is your main driver.

Will a PETG lily pipe fit the same hose as a glass one?+
Often, yes, if the hose size matches. Our sets use a 16/22mm barb, sourced from Eheim and JBL's own spec pages. Check your hose size before you order, since glass pipes are sold in more than one size.
Does Frost PETG look exactly like glass?+
Not exactly. Frost PETG is see through, but printing leaves faint layer lines that a cast or polished glass tube does not have. It still lets light and color through, just not with the same total clarity as glass.
Is PETG safe for my fish and shrimp?+
We print in PETG, the material aquarium keepers have used submerged for years. We cannot promise safety for every animal in every tank. Rinse the part in clean water before it goes in your tank.
What happens if I drop a glass lily pipe in a stocked tank?+
It can chip or shatter, and broken glass in a tank with fish or shrimp is dangerous to remove. Take extra care when handling glass near a stocked tank, or choose PETG to remove that risk entirely.
Can I mix a black inflow with a Frost outflow?+
Yes. Inflow and outflow are sold separately, so you can match colors or mix them, whatever looks right in your tank.
My glass lily pipe just cracked. What do I do now?+
Turn off your filter first, so water stops moving through the broken pipe. Net out any fish or shrimp near the break before you reach in, then remove the pieces slowly and check the substrate for small shards. Once the tank is clear, a PETG lily pipe in the same hose size is a straightforward swap and will not put you back in this spot.
