How to Get Rid of Duckweed in an Aquarium: Scoops, Rakes, and Surface Skimming Compared
To get rid of duckweed in an aquarium, you lift it off the surface by hand, then you go back and do it again. There is no one pass fix. A single frond left behind can rebuild the mat, so this is a routine you run for a few weeks, not a job you finish in an afternoon.

How do you get rid of duckweed in an aquarium?
You take it out by hand, and you keep taking it out. Physical removal is the main tool. Everything else on this list either makes the lifting easier or makes the regrowth slower.

Why a net pushes duckweed under and a slotted scoop does not
A net has a deep soft bag. Push it through the surface and the water in front of it has nowhere to go, so it rolls over the rim and carries fronds down with it. A slotted tray with a bevelled front edge does the opposite: it slides under the mat, and the water leaves down through the floor slots while the plants stay in the tray.
That is the whole idea behind both of our heads. Gaps that pass water and hold plants back. One head lifts, one head gathers.

The 2.0mm gap is a design choice, not a tested number: nobody publishes a duckweed frond size we can cite, and frond size changes with the species and the tank. We state the gap we print and let you judge it against what is floating in your water. Every tool arrives as two pieces, a head and a handle, that slide together.
Does the comb trick actually work?
Yes, and it is worth knowing about. A plain plastic hair comb has narrow tines with thin gaps. Lay it flat and glide it across the top, and clumps catch on the tines and come up with it instead of getting pushed under. It is free, and most people already own one.
Where it runs out is size. A comb is a few inches wide, the handle is short enough that your hand goes in the water, and there is no tray or fence to hold what you just lifted. On a small tank with a thin film, that is fine. On a 40 gallon with a solid green mat, you are lifting a little at a time and losing some on every trip back.
Our tool works on the same idea: gaps that let water through and hold plants back. It comes in three head widths, it has a tray or a fence to hold what comes up, and the handle keeps your hand out of the water. Assembled, it measures about 240mm to 260mm, close to 10 inches, from the front of the head to the end of the handle.
The handle is an open channel, not a flat bar, so it drains and dries instead of trapping water. One handle option ends in a saddle notch about 12mm wide that drops over a tank rim, so the tool hangs on the tank between passes. That notch is cut wide on purpose. Rim and trim thickness is not published anywhere we can cite, so measure yours before you count on it.
Should you use a surface skimmer instead of a scoop?
Not instead. They do different jobs. A scoop or a rake is a hand tool that lifts floating plants out of the tank. A surface skimmer is powered gear that pulls a thin layer of water off the top and routes it into your filter.
A skimmer is built for surface film, the oily slick that dulls the top of the water. It will pick up loose fronds that drift into it, but it is not a way to get a thick mat out. How to get rid of duckweed without killing your fish or your other plants
Take it out by hand. Manual removal is the one method that puts nothing in the water. Chemical treatments sold for duckweed are made for open ponds, not a closed tank with fish, shrimp, and rooted plants living in it.
Here is the order that wastes the least time.
- Point your filter outflow so it pushes the floating mat toward one end of the tank. Give it a few minutes to gather.
- Turn the flow off. The mat stays where the current left it.
- Slide the scoop under the mat from the side and lift straight up. Let the water drain out through the slots before you tip it into a bucket.
- Work in passes. Take the thick mat first, then come back for what floated free.
- Switch to a fine mesh net or a turkey baster for the last single fronds.
- Drop the water line a little and wipe the fronds stuck to the dry glass with a paper towel.
- Rinse anything you pulled out over a separate bucket. Fronds hide in moss, stem plants, and decor.
- Turn the flow back on.
- Sort what you lifted over the bucket and put your other floating plants back. Duckweed is much smaller than frogbit or salvinia, so it falls through a wider gap while the bigger leaves stay behind.
- Put the rest in the trash or the compost. Never a storm drain, a creek, or a pond.
How long does it take to clear duckweed completely?
Longer than one session, and there is no honest number we can give you. It depends on how much is in the tank, how many places a frond can hide, and how often you go back.
The reason is the plant itself. Duckweed spreads from single fronds. Miss one behind a filter, under a piece of decor, or tucked in a moss mat, and the mat rebuilds from there. A short pass every few days does more than one long session, because you keep catching new growth before it spreads back across the surface.
Is duckweed actually bad for a tank?
Not always. Duckweed is a fast growing floating plant. It shades the tank, it takes up nutrients from the water, and some fish and inverts graze on it. Plenty of keepers grow it on purpose in a fry tank or a shrimp tank.
It turns into a problem when you did not choose it. A full surface cover cuts the light your rooted plants need. It makes feeding harder to watch. It gets pulled into filter intakes. And it travels: share one net between two tanks and the second tank has it too.
How to stop duckweed from coming back after you clear it
You cut back what feeds it, you keep the surface easy to reach, and you check anything new before it goes in the water. None of these stop it on their own. Together they turn a weekly chore into a two minute one.
- Check new plants. Duckweed rides in on plant bags, moss, and wood from other tanks. Rinse and look before anything goes in.
- Keep a net and a scoop per tank, or rinse and dry them between tanks.
- Feed less and keep up your water changes. Do not overdose fertilizer. Less in the water means slower regrowth.
- Use your flow on purpose. Aim the outflow so floating plants collect at one end. A pile in one corner is a quick job. A film spread over the whole surface is not.
- Fence it in. A floating ring, or a length of airline tubing tied into a loop, corrals the mat into one part of the surface so you always know where to scoop. A feeding ring does the same thing.
- Keep at it. A quick pass every few days holds it where a monthly blitz will not.
