Aquarium Heater Guard Sizing: Fish Tank Heater Covers and Heater Diameters Explained

An aquarium heater guard is a slotted cage that closes around the body of a submersible heater. You size it to the glass tube, not to the number printed on the box, because most heater makers never publish the glass tube diameter at all.

That sounds like a small thing. It is not. One of the biggest heater brands publishes 36 mm for its whole line, while three other sources put the glass on that same class of heater at 24 to 25.4 mm. This guide walks you through measuring your own heater, picking a guard size, and spotting the three popular heaters a round guard will never fit.

What does an aquarium heater guard do?

A heater guard is a cage that surrounds the body of your heater. Water moves through the slots. The shell sits between the heater body and the rest of the tank. That is the whole job, and it is a mechanical job.

A guard is not the same part as a heater clip or a heater holder. A clip holds the heater in one spot on the glass. A guard puts a cage around the heater once it is already in place. Two different parts, two different problems, and you can want one without wanting the other.

Our guard is a clamshell. Two printed halves close around the heater body and mount clips hold them shut. It closes around the heater instead of sliding over it, which matters more than it sounds like, and the next section explains why.

Do you actually need one, and which fish make it worth it?

Most planted community tanks never get one. Keepers usually reach for a guard when something in the tank is big enough or busy enough to shove hardware around: cichlids that redecorate, large plecos, goldfish, or a turtle.

We are not going to tell you what will or will not happen in your tank. What a guard does is put a printed shell around the heater body. Whether that is worth 25 dollars in your setup is your call to make, not ours.

One more honest note. A guard adds a part that can trap detritus in the slots, so plan on pulling it during a water change now and then and giving it a rinse.

How do you measure your heater's diameter and length?

Measure the glass tube, not the plastic head. The head is the wider top piece with the dial and the cord, and on at least one major brand the published diameter looks like the head rather than the glass. Calipers are the right tool. A ruler will get you close.

Here is the order to do it in.

  1. Unplug the heater and let it sit for a while before you take it out of the water.
  2. Find where the plastic head ends and the round glass starts. That joint is your line. Everything below it is the part a guard wraps.
  3. Measure across the widest part of the glass tube. Write it down in mm.
  4. Turn the heater a quarter turn and measure again. A round tube reads the same both times. If the two numbers differ, your heater is not round, and no round guard will fit it.
  5. Measure the glass only, from the bottom tip up to the base of the head. That is your usable length. Do not use the length printed on the box, because that number includes the head.
  6. Look for a suction cup collar or a bracket clipped partway down the body. Anything sitting mid body has to come off or the guard cannot close around the tube.

The 36 mm and 28.2 mm figures come from Eheim's own manual and product page, recorded in aquarium/scad/lib/fitment_data.scad as heater_head_obstruction_table. The 24 to 25.4 mm band comes from three other sources recorded in the same file's heater_body_table: Fluval's own M series model table gives its glass a 2.5 cm cross section, a hands-on review of the Eheim Jager measured the glass tube at 1 inch, and a guard already on the market is built around a 24 mm heater. We read the 36 mm as the dial head rather than the glass, and that reading is our inference, not something any maker states. So we do not build a fit claim on it, we do not average the two, and we do not claim a fit for any named heater model. Measure your own heater.

What size heater guard do you need?

If your glass tube measures near 25 mm, use the 25 mm class guard. Its bore is 28.0 mm. If your heater measures something else, use the adjustable guard, which has a 35.0 mm bore and is built around a 32 mm body you measured yourself.

The bore is bigger than the heater on purpose. You fit this part to a wet heater by hand, often with your arm in a full tank, so it is built to slide, not to grip. Do not expect it to clamp onto the glass.

Length works the same way. Every length a heater maker publishes is an overall length that includes the control head, and not one of them splits that into head length and glass length. So our guard is built in segments. You add or drop a segment to match the glass you actually measured.

These are our own part's dimensions, from aquarium/catalog/wave2-proposals/heater-guard.json. The 28.0 mm bore is a 25.0 mm nominal body plus 3.0 mm of clearance we chose (2.0 mm to let it slide onto a wet heater and 1.0 mm extra because the 25.0 mm figure is a listing, not a caliper reading of our own). The 25.0 mm nominal is the glass_25 row in aquarium/scad/lib/fitment_data.scad, the top of the sourced 24 to 25.4 mm band, so a bore cut for it also clears the smaller members. Lengths are planning lengths, not fit claims: no heater maker publishes how much of the heater is glass rather than head, so measure yours. Titanium heaters get the adjustable guard and no size claim, because the one brand that publishes a titanium tube diameter states two different numbers 4 mm apart.

Which heaters will a round guard not fit?

Three popular heaters are not round at all, so no round guard fits any of them. This is worth knowing before you buy anything, ours included.

The Cobalt Aquatics Neo-Therm is a flat slab. Cobalt's own wording for it is a flat design. The Fluval E series is a rectangular housing rather than a tube. The Aqueon Pro is a non-round plastic housing. A round bore cannot close around any of those three shapes.

The Aqueon Pro comes with one caveat we will state plainly. Aqueon publishes that envelope for the 50 watt unit and nothing at all for the bigger ones, and it does not say whether the body is a true oval or a round tube with a bracket built onto it. Until somebody puts calipers on one, we treat it as not round.

We name these rather than leave them off the list, because a heater missing from a size chart reads like an oversight and sends people to the nearest listed size instead.

Modular sleeve, cage, or built in guard: what are the real options?

There are four ways people cover a heater, and they are not equal. A modular plastic sleeve, a one piece cage, a guard the heater maker built in, or a DIY pipe.

Modular sleeves are the cheap ones you see in four packs. They are interlocking grid strips you snap around the heater and cut to length. They are the price floor of this whole category and they fit whatever they fit.

A built in guard is the simplest answer if you have not bought a heater yet. Some heaters ship with a cage already on them, and then you are done thinking about this.

A DIY pipe works too. Slotted PVC or a mesh tube costs almost nothing if you already own a hole saw and do not mind how it looks.

A printed cage is the option that can be sized. That is the only real reason to pick one. Ours closes around the body as a clamshell instead of sliding on from the end, which matters because a heater's head is often wider than its glass, and any collar clipped to the middle of the body would block a sleeve that loads from the tip.

How wide should the flow slots be?

Our slots measure 7 mm across. That is a measurement of the part, and we will not dress it up as anything else.

Wide slots are the point on this kind of part. A heater guard is a shroud that has to let water move through it freely. It is not a screen, and it is not built to hold anything in or out. If you want a part with a fine gap because of what lives in your tank, that is a shrimp guard or a fish guard, and those are different products with different gaps for a reason.

The shell itself is 3 mm thick, which is heavier than most of our parts, because a cage takes knocks that a hose fitting never does.

Suction bracket or rim clip: how should the guard mount?

Pick by your tank, not by preference. A rim clip is useless on a rimless tank. Suction cups are the wrong answer on a braced rim where there is glass to hang from. So we make both.

The rim clip opens to 12 mm of tank wall, and a nylon M5 thumb screw takes up the slack from about 2 mm on up. That is an adjustable range, not a claim about your tank, so measure your rim.

The suction version uses keyhole slots that take standard aquarium cups. The cups do not ship with the part, and neither does the thumb screw. You get printed pieces only.

Speaking of pieces: the 150 mm and 200 mm guards ship as four printed pieces, and the 250 mm and 300 mm guards ship as seven, because the longer ones are built from two joined segments.

Why a guard is a mechanical shroud, not a safety device

We make no claim about heat, temperature, or what a heater does to anything in your tank. Our guard is a printed cage around a heater body. That is the only thing we say about it.

That is deliberate, and it is worth saying out loud, because a lot of listings in this category promise outcomes nobody has tested. We would rather sell you a part with an honest measurement on it than a promise we cannot stand behind.

The heater is still your equipment to run. Follow whatever your heater's own maker tells you to do, and keep an eye on it the same as you would without a cage on it.

Heater guards for turtle tanks and cichlid tanks

Same guard, same sizing question. A turtle tank or a big cichlid tank does not need a different bore, it needs the bore that matches your heater's glass. Measure first, then pick.

Turtle tanks bring one extra thing to think about. Turtles are strong and they climb on hardware, so plan on checking the mount and the clips as part of your normal maintenance rather than setting it and forgetting it.

Can you 3D print an aquarium heater guard?+

Yes, and free files exist if you own a printer and want to make your own. The hard part is not the printing, it is knowing what diameter to print for, since that number is missing from almost every heater spec sheet. Do heater guards work for turtle tanks?+

A turtle tank uses the same guard and the same sizing rule as any other tank. Measure your heater's glass tube and match the bore to it. Turtles climb on hardware, so check the mount and the clips as part of your normal maintenance.
